Is it illegal for anmal control to put a stray dog to sleep?

there's a stray dog in my neighborhood, and animal control is threatening to put it to sleep. that CANT be legal. Is it??Is it illegal for anmal control to put a stray dog to sleep?
Yes, it is. Unfortunately, that's what happens to a lot, if not most, of the strays. Most places to have to keep the animals at the shelter for 10 days to see if someone will claim it. However, at the humane society here, pit bulls and other ';bully'; breeds are put down within a couple days - they won't give them back or adopt them out if they don't pass a ';temperament test.'; They're pretty lax about the test on most dogs, but not on pit bulls and the like. If the dog so much as looks at someone the wrong way, they put it down. Very sad:(Is it illegal for anmal control to put a stray dog to sleep?
If the dog is not adoptable, or if the owners cannot be found, yes, it is perfectly legal.
Yes it is legal. If you're that worried about it, take it and make it your own dog.

If you're not going to do anything to help the situation, then don't complain about it.
I'm not sure what is legal and not....but the way I understand it is if they figure that the dog will not be able to be adopted out (aggression, etc.) they are able to put it down. Otherwise, stray dogs that have a chance to be adopted stay for at least a week. Dogs that seem not to be stray stay longer than a week...so the Animal Control in my area says.
coming from a place where there is no animal control. it is sad but necessary because they run the streets and reproducing and costing others money. It could end up costing into the 1000
Yes it is unfortunately
Yes, it is legal. In my city, more than 50,000 dogs are gassed by animal control each year. Yes, that number is correct - 50,000+.

It is very sad when people let their animals run the streets and fail to neuter them.
Yes it is legal . They can put him to sleep because he may have no shots and for the saftey of humans and other animals they feel like it is the best thing. If you were to take the dog to the vet clean him up feed him and get his shots they can't take him away from you because you have adopted this stray.
no they have the right to do that for medical reasons they can do that but not only for medical reasons also for other reasons
Unfortunately...I think they can.

They did this to my grandmothers poodle.

R.I.P Buddy :*[
I think it may b legal if its hurting some1 other than that..no
If they cannot find owners in so long , they have a righ to do it. Here in MT, they have to have been adoptable at the Humane Society for over 30 days before the option of euthanizing them is available. But they usually have to take it in for so long first to see if an owner turns up or if they dog is adoptable. If they find the dog to be aggressive or unadoptable they also have a right to protect the public from this animal and euthanize it. I would call down to animal control and get a copy of their requirements on this. Sometimes the city runs the humane societies as well, so they would have to have a city law reguarding this issue as well.
I don't know where you are, but unclaimed pets are euthanized all the time in Texas. They multiply too quickly, and there aren't enough homes for them all.

Yes, it is legal. If the dog is determined to be a dangerous animal at large, they can and will do that. Their main concern is for the safety of the citizenry. If the dog is not deemed to be dangerous, then generally what happens is that Animal Control will pick the dog up and do at least a cursory health evaluation. The dog will be held for X number of days for the owner to claim it. If no one comes forward to claim the dog, the dog is evaluated further to see if it is adoptable. Then, depending on the area you are in, the dog is held for another X number of days to give it a chance to be adopted. After that time if no one adopts it, unfortunately, the dog may be put down. Shelters are forced to this sad deed due to lack of space, lack of funding, and lack of adopters. Some areas are able to have no-kill shelters, but that takes money and space. You can check for the regulations of your area by doing a search for ';department of animal control (your city)';.
unfortuantely it is legal. if u want the dog to live u can either take it in. or u can take it to a no kill shelter. animal control will take it to the pound and then after a week if no one claims it they will put it to sleep. so u have two really good options here. and one not so good one. so go get that dog and save it's life
Why wouldn't it be legal?? Dog has no home, wandering around in the neighbourhood, dog has no tags likely?? It's up to them what happens.. Don't let your dog run free.. and you don't have to worry about animal control.
I live in Missouri and I know it is legal here. If no one claims the dog then they will put it to sleep. It is a shame. : (
Do something, before its' to late! Can't you keep the poor thing for the mean time?...: :(---he is needing someone!
Did you know that @ 10 MILLION dogs and cats are out to sleep every year in the US because there are not enough homes for them.

There is nothing illegal about it. There are simply not enough people willing to take these dogs.
