How long does it take for the birth control pill to start working?

It reaches maximum levels in your bloodstream after you have taken an active pill each day for seven days in a row.

So you are protected after seven days.

Many American doctors will tell you to wait a whole month, but they just don't want to get sued in case you happen to be one of the 4 women in a 1000 who get pregnant even if they take the pill 100% correctly. How long does it take for the birth control pill to start working?
They say use secondary protection until you've been taking it 1 month. How long does it take for the birth control pill to start working?
It depends what birth control pill you're on but most doctors say 1-3 months. I still used condoms the first 3 months because it made me nervous, but after 3 months it's deffinently in your system and working.

Just remember that if you take antibiotics while you're on the pill it could make it less affective, ask your doctor to be sure what you can and can't do.
Most physicians recommend at least two full cycles on BCP to insure optimal protection.
It depends on your exact prescription.

But most of the different types of birth control pill prescriptions take anywhere between 2 and 4 weeks to come into full effect.

If you fall before that range, you might be in trouble.

No, it's not instantaneous, ignore that person's comment. It takes a couple of weeks but I'd recommend that you take it for at least a month to be safe. Definitely feel free to consult with your doctor though.
I heard it takes 3 months to have it's full effect. That way the hormones that are in the bc have time to cycle through your system and are far more effective.

Way back when I had first started taking bc my doc told me to make sure to use other protection for the first 3 months...that's just what I've been told.
IF YOUVE TAKEN PROPERLY TAKES BETWEEN 10 TO 14 DAYS
14 days...
like they say ideally two weeks thru to two cycles depending on how efficient you are looking at it being....although you need to bear in mind that various things compromise the effectiveness of the pill such as certain other medications prescribed by your doctor, alcohol, certain illegal drugs etc so it is always advisable to use secondary protection anyway aside the fact you need to pratect yourself from the STI's out there as some of them leave you infertile!!
The insert included with the birth control medication (along with any OBGYN that knows what they're doing) will tell you that it takes around a month to really start working.

Also, they both will tell you that you still need to use contraception for the first month. Just to be safe.

But... I recommend using contraception the whole time. I got pregnant when I was on birth control. And I had BEEN on it almost a year.
it generally takes anywhere from 3-4 weeks to fully get into your system.
10-14 days
if you start on the first sunday after you start your period, you're protected immediately
According to Planned Parenthood:

';If you start the combination pill within five days after the start of your period, take the first active pill of the first pack. You will not need to use a back up method of birth control. You are protected against pregnancy immediately.';

(A combination pill is most common - you can tell because it will have sugar pills, or non-active pills.)

However, most doctors will tell you to use a back up method for the first month. Just because something is supposed to work in theory, doesn't mean it actually will. It may take your body a little while to adjust, everyone's different. Better to be safe than sorry - that's why you got on the pill in the first place.
The first time you take it.
