How long should you take birth control before you can rely on it?

I was wondering how long you need to have taken birth control before it is considered effective in preventing pregnancy..

Some doctors recommend a whole months use. Starting the day you first have your period, so it could be running fully in your system. How long should you take birth control before you can rely on it?
The instructions should say. If you take it on the first day you start your period, then you are protected right away. If you wait, then you must wait a month.
The doctor told me I have to take 7 pills before I am safe with preventing pregnancy.
